WOW, 20 Shizuoka Middle School students practiced STEM lessons through observation, digital microscopy and Hexbug engineering and these kiddos were awesome! When I asked students to carefully draw the unusual objects they each chose, from a large selection we had in the room, I was amazed at the intricate detail they put into their drawings. Several could easily been used for scientific illustrations, especially one's student's careful drawing of a white pine cone. Then when the students learned how to convert their mobile phones into digital microscopes using a small convex lens and a bobby pin they were captivated for over half an hour. One thing that worked really well was that several of the middle school students did not have mobile phones, but the graduate students attending the session did so I asked them to partner up. The grad students jumped at the chance to work with the middle schoolers and in an instant there was 40 people engrossed in digital microscopy!
